Citations are how we mark our research trail for our future selves and eventual readers to follow.

Citations are an important part of research, marking the path of the scholarly conversation and providing context for the thoughts of others that you use in building your own understanding and arguments. Below you will find overviews of major citation styles as well as information on management tools that can help you keep your resources organized.

Citation Management Software

A citation manager is a tool that allows you to collect your citations and format bibliographies using a particular citation style. Here's a comparison of the various software out there for citation management

You do not need to use a citation manager to do research -- some students prefer using a spreadsheet, an annotated bibliography or analog formats to keep track of resources. The library supports the use of Zotero (so you can ask us for help with it), but the three most common options are below:
