How to Add a Turnitin Assignment to the Course

Begin by adding an assignment or forum

When setting up the assignment or forum, click to expand the section, Turnitin plagiarism plugin settings

  • Change the Enable Turnitin setting to Yes, which enables access to the Turnitin settings

Settings have been pre-selected on your behalf to provide the most typical experience in using the Turnitin features

Allows students to see Turnitin Similarity Reports.

  • When should the file be submitted to Turnitin? -  set to Submit file when first uploaded
  • Allow submission of any file type? - set to Yes
Submissions are not rejected. Compatible files are processed.
For more information on the types of files that Turnitin can process see File Types and Sizes
  • Store Student Papers - set to Yes
Papers are stored in a Turnitin student paper repository. Papers submitted to the assignment are checked against the student’s previous work and other students' submissions within your current and previous classes. If you select No repository,  papers will not be stored in the Turnitin student paper repository for matching.

Note: If you do not select 'Yes' for at least one of the 'Check against...' options, then a Similarity Report will not be generated.

  • Check against stored student papers - set to Yes
Check against the Turnitin student paper repository when processing similarity Reports for papers.
  • Check against internet - set to YesCheck against internet content included in the Turnitin repository when processing similarity Reports for papers. New content added to the internet can require several months of processing in order to be incorporated into the Turnitin repository.
  • Check against journals, periodicals and publications - set to Yes

  • Select the Report generation speed from three options:

    • Generate reports immediately (resubmissions are not allowed)
Similarity Reports for all submissions will be generated immediately. Students cannot re-submit papers. Submissions must be deleted by the instructor to enable resubmission.

    • Generate reports immediately (students can re-submit until due date):after 3 resubmissions, reports generate after 24 hours - set to this choice
    • Similarity Reports for the initial submission by each student user to this assignment will be generated immediately.
Additionally, students can re-submit 3 times and receive an immediate report. After 3 resubmissions, the report will take 24 hours to generate. Students may resubmit as often as desired until the assignment due date. Only the latest submission is available to the instructor or student. Previous versions are removed. Student submissions will compare against one another within the assignment on the due date and time, which may result in a change in the similarity Report similarity index and results at the due date and time. This
option is typically used when students are self-reviewing and revising their submissions and able to view the similarity Report. No resubmissions allowed after the assignment due date has passed.

    • Generate reports on due date (resubmissions are allowed until due date)
Similarity Reports will not be generated for any submission until the assignment due date has passed. Students may resubmit as many times as needed before the due date, but no reports will be visible until the due date has passed. No resubmissions allowed after the assignment due date has passed.

Note: Similarity Report generation after 3 resubmissions is subject to a 24-hour delay.
