Recording Instructional Media for Students: Zoom Technical Tips

Technical Tips

How to Improve the Technical Quality of Your Meeting

Our George Fox Digital (GFD) Production team shares production tips that will improve the quality of your Zoom meeting.

Tips for better audio

  • Get into a quiet place
  • Stay away from fans, refrigerators, air conditioning units that cycle off and on, televisions, or interior walls next to busy roads.
  • Use wired headphones with a built-in microphone. This gets the microphone closer to your mouth which is always a good thing!
  • Use a simple USB microphone that plugs into your computer. You can then change your audio input source in your Zoom settings so Zoom selects your USB microphone rather than your computer’s built in mic.

Tips for better lighting

  • Turn lights on! If you have a light you can turn on and point towards your face, do it! It helps with your computer’s built-in camera.
  • Use Natural Light (outside daylight). Place yourself near a window for a more pleasing look.
  • If possible, avoid mixed color temperatures. If you are using daylight or cooler 5600K bulbs, avoid mixing in warmer 3200K bulbs because those mixed color temperatures create unwanted colors for video.

Tips for Better Video

  • Ensure you have a stable internet connection. Public WiFi, mobile hotspots, or setting up too far away from your internet router can create problems for Zoom interviews. Try to have the best possible WiFi connection while you are on Zoom.
  • If you have a camera and an HDMI cable, you use a cheap HDMI capture card to allow your computer to use your camera’s video signal as a webcam. This replaces the webcam on your computer. You will also need to set up a tripod to look into the camera. We recommend staying away from this method unless you feel totally comfortable with this type of setup.
